Celebrate Malaysia Art Exhibitions: 15 July 2010 – 3 October 2010

You cannot help but notice the difference as Merdeka Day draws closer. The number of Jalur Gemilang, the Malaysian flag, being displayed by businesses and houses begin to increase, and newspapers dedicate more pages to Merdeka Day related stories. Two weeks ago, I could not help but notice a government convoy of vans and SUVs parked in front of Bukit Bintang Plaza, with a group of volunteers handing out mini flags that can be attached to vehicles to the public. Of course, they were rather hard not to notice as the event, if you call it that, was accompanied by the loud blaring song about Jalur Gemilang. Come to think of it, I have been hearing it played while waiting for the LRT as well this month.

So it is no surprise that Galeri Petronas’ ongoing exhibitions, two to be exact, carry the theme of Celebrate Malaysia. Honouring the country’s 53rd anniversary, The Celebrate Malaysia event features two new art exhibitions, Young Malaysian Artists: New Objec(tion), and Words+Pictures=Book. The exhibitions show unique expressions of up and coming Malaysian artists who have been influenced and nurtured by Malaysian elements and whose efforts play an important role in the development of Malaysian art.

The first exhibition, Young Malaysian Artists: New Objec(tion), showcases radical new voices in Malaysian art, while the second, Words+Pictures=Book gives due recognition to Malaysian children’s picture book illustration as an art form. The exhibits on display are highly innovative and reflect contemporary Malaysian artists’ pursuit to define themselves in the wider context of the art world. While largely within the realm of pop-surrealism, the young artists demonstrate their skills and commentary in very unique ways, and set themselves apart with their individual work.

The second exhibition is the first of its kind in Malaysia, and introduces the world of illustration to the Malaysian Public. Entitled Words+Pictures=Book! Contemporary Malaysian Picture Book Illustrations, this exhibition showcases the process of illustration by 10 distinguished Malaysian illustrators. Be ready for a fascinating exploration that will draw you into a dynamic, dreamlike and engaging territory, with 10 uniquely Malaysian tales told in different styles. A visual treat, the exhibition also serves to elevate the status of Malaysian picture book illustration to a serious art form and inspire new generation illustrators, in recognition of its role in a burgeoning Malaysian art landscape. A unique facet of the exhibition is the displayed process examples demonstrating the illustrators’ entire creative process in the production of picture books. Examples of preliminary sketches and storyboards are shown for a rare behind-the-scenes look at what goes on during the development phase.
