Money & Banking

Malaysia's currency is called the Ringgit (RM). 1 Ringgit is made up of 100 Sen. There are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Ringgit notes and 5, 10, 20 and 50 Sen coins. It is very common in Malaysia to refer to the Ringgit in Dollars, which can sometimes lead to confusion - especially with US visitors.

We recommend travelers to always have small bills at hand as payment is often expected in the exact amount. This is especially true out of the larger cities - you will find it very difficult to get a RM100 bill changed into smaller denominations.

Foreign Currency/Money Exchange

Paying directly with foreign currency is uncommon and even if a vendor accepts it, the exchange rate offered will be less than desirable.

It is recommended to exchange foreign currencies into Ringgit. All banks offer exchange services, and you can even find exchange booths at most large airport, major train stations and the more popular tourist centres. Exchange services will charge a small fee of typically RM10 per transaction.

Credit/Debit Cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in Malaysia. All the major banks offer counter as well as ATM credit card cash advances. You can withdraw cash on most of the ATM's using your debit card as well. Please check if your debit network matches the networks listed on the ATM. Cirrus, Maestro and Plus are the most common debit networks in Malaysia. Your home bank will provide information which banks in Malaysia they have partnerships with.

Travelers Cheques

Travelers Cheques can be exchanged at moneychangers or at bank counters. Banks will charge you a fee of typically RM10 per travelers cheque.
