Although most Malaysians might not realise it, the various states that make up the country have a maritime past. While most are not as illustrious and important as Malacca, most if not all of the states relied on maritime trade for economic growth and naval power for political survival. The sea and the riverine waterways were the lifeblood of the region, and many towns and numerous villages were built on banks and estuaries. For Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo, sea routes and riverine waterways and the people who plied them were especially important, as water was the primary mode of transport during the colonial era.

The regatta will be held in the backdrop of the idyllic islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

This heritage of seafaring is still kept alive by the yachtsmen of the Kinabalu Yacht Club, one of the oldest surviving yacht clubs from the colonial era. Every year the club hosts a number of yachting events, including the City Day Open Regatta. The regatta celebrates Kota Kinabalu’s elevation to city status. Being a coastal city with a maritime past, the regatta strives to highlight the importance of the sea as a recreational area for the city’s inhabitants. The regatta is in its 12th edition this year.

The 12th City Day Open Regatta 2011 will be held on 26th and 27th February 2011 at sea between the Kinabalu Yacht Club and the nearby islands of the Tengku Abdul Rahman Park.
