The ninth edition of the country’s premier yachting event, the Royal Langkawi International Regatta is set to take place from 11th till 15 January 2011. The race will take place on the clear waters surrounding Langkawi Island and is organised by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. At least 40 yachts have confirmed their participation, including teams from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Thailand, Germany, in addition to local teams from Malaysia.

This year’s regatta will see teams competing in a new category, the Hobe16 class, a race for 16 foot yachts handled by a team of two yachtsmen. The race promises to be an exciting one as yachts in this division can reach speeds of up to 20 knots under the right wind conditions. Up to 6 teams have signed up for the Hobe 16 class so far. Besides private local teams, the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces will be registering three yachts for the 2011 regatta, Navy 1 in the Sports class, Zuhrah in the Racing class and Musytari in the Sixth class.

The regatta is not much of a spectator sport as all the action takes place out in the open sea. The organisers, however, do encourage the general public to serve as volunteers and also as crew members for competitors who require extra crew.
