After a lengthy drive down winding, misty roads we arrived at Taman Negara Kinabalu, or Kinabalu National Park. Mount Kinabalu loomed above us. We’d wanted to try to climb the mountain during our stay (Sarah, a longtime KLer who’d never been to Sabah, was especially excited about the possibility), but we couldn’t make the two-day climb fit in our schedule.
We were happy enough to explore the natural beauty of Sabah in the serene tranquility of the park. We chose to walk the Pandanus Trail, one of the several which wind through the woods.
Everywhere we went the chirping of insects hummed all about us, welcoming us to the splendor of Borneo. The infamous rafflesia flower, the largest (and stinkiest) on Earth, was nowhere to be found, unfortunately.
Once we’d finished our trek through the park, we took a peek at the Botanical Gardens which were located just at the park’s entrance. Given that it was February, though, not many of the orchids for which the gardens are famous were in bloom.
On our way out of the gardens, we noticed a poster for the ice cream soda we’d tried earlier. Turns out that the can’s design was done by none other than Joe Flizzow, Malaysia’s most famous rapper and a personal friend of Sarah’s, whose track “Do It Duit” we’d been banging in the car during our entire trip to Sabah. The can’s design was nice enough, but like we said the soda itself needed more flavour, although I don’t think we can hold that against Joe.
