April 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm

The KL Tower International Night Towerthon Challenge is back! This annual event will once again see runners from all over the world racing up 2,058 steps to reach the top of the KL Tower. The race is open to all members of the public and staff of Telekom Malaysia and consists of nine different categories, that is the Men Open (18-39 years), Men Veteran Junior (40-49 years), Men Veteran Senior (50-59 years), Women Open (18-34 years), Women Veteran (35 years and above), Boy and Girl Junior (13-17 years), Telekom Malaysia Staff (Men and Women) (18 years and above), Media/Celebrity Category (Men and Women) (18 years and above) and Disabled Category (18 years and above). The race will start at the bottom where runners will have to run 800 metres uphill before climbing up the 2,058 steps to reach the top level at Mega View (TH3).

For those who will be participating in the towerthon for the first time this year, here are some tips that might come in handy. First-timers are always encouraged to try to finish the race injury free. This is achieved by running up the stairs one by one, instead of tackling on two stairs at a time. Whenever possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator to train up your stamina and the leg muscles. Some of the previous runners train by running up the steps at Batu Caves or even KL Tower itself. Training at the KL Tower will give you an edge over the other participants as you become more familiar with the actual race site.

One thing to keep in mind is that during the actual race, the staircase will be packed with many other runners. Railings will most probably be wet with sweat, so try not to rely on them for grip as you might trip and fall. Drink lots of water (but not too much!) as carrying a water bottle may be tiring for your hands. With so many people huffing and puffing while going up that small enclosed area, there could be a chance that you may start to hyperventilate before you are halfway through the race. So remember to pace yourself from the start.

For those who participated in last year’s towerthon challenge and is looking forward to improving their running time, the registration for the race is now open for the public.
