How does a person usually spend their New Year’s eve? There are some who would spend it partying the whole night. Others may prefer to spend it at home with their family and friends. Once in a while, it is not unusual to find individuals who would want to celebrate it with a difference.

This year, over 700 Malaysians have signed up to join the Malakoff Inter-state Fellowship Ride 2010/11 which will be held on the 31st December 2010 till 1st January 2011. These adventurous souls will be cycling across three states – Penang, Kedah and Perak and covering a distance of 238 kilometres in two days. This ride, jointly organised by the State Government of Penang, the Penang State Sports Council, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) and the Knights of the Round Table (KOTRT), aims to raise a total of RM50,000 in funds which will be shared equally by Association of Resource and Education for Autistic Children and Pusat Belia Bahnhof Pulau Pinang. Riders are scheduled to cover 67 kilometres within the Penang island on the first day and 171 kilometres on the next day. Participants of the ride will also have the privilege of cycling across the Penang Bridge as it is only open to the participants of this event.

This programme is part of Malakoff’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform, which is the Malakoff Community Partnerships. Other than the objective of raising the funds for the two charity organisations, Malakoff is also making a statement to show the society of their support for a healthy and active lifestyle. The company will remain committed to supporting worthy events aimed at providing exposure to Malaysian sports enthusiasts as well as contributions to the society in some ways.

Safety of the riders are top priority, therefore the organisation have enrolled assistance from Polis Diraja Malaysia, Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai (MPSP), Juru Auto City, Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), Penang Bridge Sdn. Bhd, KTM Mononation and Delta Business Solutions to ensure a safe and smooth ride for all. KOTRT will be providing the technical support for the Ride. For those who are not used to riding long distances, there will be riding marshals who will either ‘tow’ the rider to the nearest platoon OR pick up riders who have fallen too far behind in their pick-up trucks or lorries to the next available stop. Water stations will be set up along the route for riders to refill before they continue on their journey. Light lunch will also be served on both days. There will also be a lucky draw for participants with a valid riding plate. The most important thing though, other than hoping that one’s riding plate number will be one of the lucky numbers, is to enjoy the ride and the great time of fellowship with other fellow riders.
