The Sandakan Airport is located just north west of the city centre of Sandakan, in state of Sabah. The airport services Sandakan, and is an important airport on the east coast of Sabah, acting as a hub for smaller airports. The airport's peak season happens during July and September, as visitors arrive for turtle watching.
The airport offers daily flights from three airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia, and MASwings. Both Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia offer flights to Kuala Lumpur via KLIA, and Kota Kinabalu while MASwings offers flights to Kota Kinabalu, Kudat and Tawau. The airport does not offer any international flights at the present time.
The airport building is a simple but elegant two storey structure, with both arrival and departure halls located at the ground floor of the building. Facilities at the airport include car rental counters, Automated Teller Machines, and restaurants. There is no currency exchange at the airport.
The airport's normal operating hours are between 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. In event of flight delays, the airport will remain open until the flight has taken off, or has been cancelled.
The airport is located on the fringes of Sandakan, around 11 kilometres from the city centre. Coupon taxis are available at the airport and the average fare between Sandakan and the airport is no more than RM30.
Public bus service between Sandakan and the airport is also available. Buses arrive at 30 minute intervals on an average between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in front of the airport.
