Ipoh is renowned for its colonial architecture, with most of its famous landmarks hidden in the city’s Old Town district. British colonial style is easily recognizable throughout the city, with significant efforts put into preserving and maintaining these buildings. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is one such eye-catcher that is considered a staple of the city’s skyline and architecture. Opened in 1909, the clock tower was developed to honor the first British resident of Perak state.
Another iconic structure in the city is the Ipoh Railway Station. Located in the southwest quadrant, it is the main rail station for the state of Perak and receives both passenger and freight trains. Walking distance from most major tourist attractions, the iconic railway station, with its feather-white domes and sculpted gardens, is a cherished photography spot with tourists. Built in colonial style architecture, the station grows in beauty during the evening when lit up with colorful displays.
Another example of traditional colonial architecture is that of the Ipoh Town Hall and Old Post Office. This structure was built between 1914 and 1916 in Neo-Classical style. The first political party in the country held its inaugural congress at its location in 1945. The building was also used as a town hall, public theatre, and staged plays and musicals in its heyday. Facing the Ipoh Railway Station, the structure is listed as a building of national importance under the National Heritage Act of 2005.
