Johor Bahru was only given city status in 1994, yet it is one of Malaysia’s fastest growing districts. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks bear cultural or historical weight. While red-hot shopping and entertainment complexes, and sports arenas serve the ever-growing population. One of the more famous historical landmarks is Istana Besar. Also known as the Grand Palace, it served royalty none other than the Sultan of Johor. Dating back to 1866, the structure was built in an Anglo-Malay architectural style. Today, the venue is used for prestigious royal functions or official state events.
Kota Iskandar Mosque
A landmark of profound religious significance in Johor Bahru is the Masjid Kota Iskandar or the Kota Iskandar Mosque. A late arrival, this mosque opened in 2015 and is the official state mosque of Johor. Developed in a Moorish architectural design, the Kora Iskandar Mosque has a surrounding garden that serves as an overflow prayer site, as well as an area for hosting Islamic events and gatherings. Six minarets frame the mosque’s central dome: the night lights a reminder of its eternal beauty. Connected by a bridge to the Sultan Ismail Building, the mosque serves as a meeting place for the Johor state Legislative Assembly.
Sultan Ibrahim Building
Visitors on the hunt for timeless colonial architecture in Johor Bahru should visit the Sultan Ibrahim Building. Previously a government building for the state of Johor, it was constructed between 1936 and 1939, officially opening in 1940. During the British colonial era, the building served administrative functions for a time, now moved to Kota Iskandar. One of the city’s most famous landmarks, the building design echoes British Colonial and Malay architecture. Though damaged in World War II, some scars are still noticeable today. The location is popular with those seeking to snap architectural photography with an edge.
