Kota Kinabalu – Places of Worship

Kota Kinabalu is made up of many religions, with a place for every prayer. Visitors can honor Islam, Buddhism, Christianity and more at locations throughout the city and the surrounding areas. Kota Kinabalu is home to one of the oldest stone churches in the entire region, as well as a Chinese Buddhist temple famous in Malaysia.



City Mosque (Masjid Bandaraya)

On a striking backdrop of fluttering palms, the largest mosque in Kota Kinabalu, the City Mosque (or Masjid Bandaraya) is perched next to a lagoon. From a distance, it floats above the deathly-still water.  Opened in 2000,  the mosque includes architecture based on the Nabawi Mosque of Saudi Arabia. With near to 15 acres of land, the building alone can accommodate up to 12,000 visitors. It is a famous site for tourists, especially those looking to snap a beautiful photo of the mosque and its stunning background.

Pu Toh Tze Temple

This Buddhist Temple located in Kota Kinabalu includes architecture characteristic of the traditional Chinese temple design. Besides ten statues of various deities on the grounds,  the Goddess of Mercy blesses all who enter. Due to its standalone architecture and artistic elements, including traditional carvings  engraved throughout, the famous Buddhist temple is one of the most popular tourist sites in Kota Kinabalu, and welcomes visitors from across the region.

St. Michael’s Church

With its foundation originally laid in 1936, St. Michael’s Church is approximately 25 minutes from the city center of Kota Kinabalu. It is the oldest church in the region of Penampang, layered with a cemetery, bell tower, grotto of Mary, parish hall and more. The church holds weekly masses with an up-to-date timetable available on the church website. It is popular with visitors due to it being the second oldest stone church in the Sabah region.
