Kuching – Places of Worship

Kuching offers religious sites and places of worship for various religious faiths. In such an ethnically diverse city, it is no surprise that visitors will find mosques, churches, Hindu, and even Chinese temples, among many religious venues. Some of these include national landmarks, such as one of the oldest Chinese temples in the region.

Kuching City Mosque

Dubbed the Old Mosque or Masjid Lama, the original mosque was built in 1852 before its revival in 1968. It is one of the most beautiful sights in the city of Kuching, especially at sunset when seen from the river. Once the state mosque, it is believed to be the site of the oldest mosque built in Kuching. Located along the Sarawak River, the mosque now rubs shoulders with shops, restaurants and other entertainment venues. Its unique designs, rose and cream coat, and large gold domes are  a staple of the skyline.

The temple is busiest during prayer times in the early morning and evening. Located only 1 kilometer from the waterfront district, Fridays see the temple priests begin traditional Hindu songs, making for a very special and often, private experience.

The oldest Chinese temple in the region, the Tua Pek Kong Temple was constructed in the 1850s with a 7-story pagoda as part of its structure. The original temple survived a large city-wide fire but was ultimately destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt in 1957 and renovated over the years with the most recent occurring in 1989.
