A well-known UNESCO World Heritage city, Malacca is brimming with landmarks and architecture that hark back to its checkered past. One of the most popular cities in Malaysia for cultural and historical tourism, the city of Malacca focuses on the preservation and restoration of its architectural gems. Visitors will find the downtown historic district full of colorful sites and attractions, enhanced by an architectural story unique to the city. One such building is the Proclamation of Independence Memorial. Now housing a museum, the building was founded in 1912 and previously homed the Malacca Club: a social center for British society in the city.
Another unique historical structure in the heart of the city is Stadthuys. Located in Red Square, the public can visit the History and Ethnography Museum which displays various traditional costumes and artefacts representative of Malacca’s history. Stadthuys is said to be the oldest Dutch structure in all of Asia, having been erected in 1650. Located next to the Christ Church, it previously served as a home for the Malacca Free School. The large building is simple in appearance and includes wooden shutters and a tiled roof, in line with the rouge-style of other Dutch Colonial buildings in Red Square.
Modern Malacca is also represented by various landmarks, with one of the more famous being the Menara Taming Sari. The 24-story tall tower reaches 110 meters in height and is the first and tallest gyro tower in Malaysia. Opened in 2008, visitors can experience an aerial panorama of the city from the observation deck. Many of the city’s famous landmarks are visible to the human eye, including the Maritime Museum, Pulau Melaka and more.
