Malacca – Art

Considered a city struck by culture, Malacca offers a plethora of art galleries that showcase Malaysian and foreign works of art. Though the most popular art spaces are in the historic center, Jonker Street Market is visited for unique art showings. The majority of artwork includes those by local artists, making the galleries a staple for visitors beckoned by the city’s culture and heritage.
 



Tham Siew Inn Artist Gallery

Founded in 2001 by Tham Siew Inn and his sons, this art gallery is located in the center of Malacca’s historic district. Evoking the artist’s dream of sustainability, it exhibits works across realms of Home, Art, Workplace and Garden. The collection of work includes more than 100 paintings and works of art that date from ancient times to  modern periods. In addition to the gallery, a store includes artwork for purchase. The artists have also worked on several collaborations including bespoke artwork for private buyers.

Balai Seni Lukis Melaka (Melaka Art Gallery)

Opened in 1958, the Malacca Art Gallery is located on the upper floor of a building which doubles up as the Malaysia Youth Museum. The building itself was originally used as an administrative office of the Dutch Malacca government. Visitors to the gallery can soak up 150 paintings and 30 special sculptures designed by an impressive selection of Malaysian artists. Several works by foreign artists are also on display. In addition to the regularly exhibitions, the gallery includes mobile shows that combine creative mediums, such as calligraphy, film and more.

Jehan Chan Art Gallery

The Jehan Chan Art Gallery is a short two-minute walk from the Jonker Street Night Market. The gallery highlights works of art by renowned Malaysian artist Jehan Chan. His most well-known art pieces include watercolor collages on crinkled rice paper. A flair for enchanting landscapes, his most famous is the Seascape Series and Swimming Carps Series. In a small boutique gallery, visitors get the royal treatment with personal tours led by the on-site curator.
