Maritime Museum (Muzium Samudera)
The Maritime Museum focuses on the historical aspects of maritime activities in the Malacca region. Opened in 1994 by then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the museum began with a single phase that would give way to a larger presence in 1998 with the opening of a second phase. The highlight of the museum is the exhibition of a Flor do Mar replica. This ship replica stands 34 meters in height and is 36 meters long. Visitors who board the replica will encounter fascinating documents and photographs, amongst other artefacts, that point to Malacca’s rich seafaring heritage. The second phase channels visitors into a separate building which displays the city’s history: from the colonial era through to Malaysia’s independence.
