Malacca and its surrounding areas are well-known for offering many types of green escapes. From quiet parks offering central yet tranquil retreats to rugged hiking adventures through dense canopy, visitors will be spoilt with outdoor and natural spaces when visiting the city. Many of the more popular parks are located beyond the center, including those devoted to trekking and hiking.
Melaka Botanical Garden
One of Malacca’s most popular gardens, formerly the Hutan Rekreasi Ayer Keroh, the Malacca Botanical Gardens is a large park with over 300 species of plants and flowers. One of the park’s centerpieces reveals large stones with carvings of prehistoric animals: previously indigenous to the area. With various walking and running paths, a children’s play area, picnic spots and even a suspension bridge for crossing, visitors will have hours of enjoyment. The park covers an area of more than 359 hectares and includes a 10-hectare area reserved for camping.

Bukit Batu Lebah Recreational Forest
This nature preserve is popular with trekkers and hikers. Roughly 20 minutes from the city center, the forest offers stunning hiking trails amidst tropical forests. Caves are also found within the park and are safe for exploring. Tours include hiking, spelunking and exploring the vital ecosystem of the forest. Most trodden by beginner hikers, the area’s various locations offer views of the Straits of Malacca Bay. Morning hiking is advised as temperatures can become uncomfortable from midday. Thousand Flower Garden (Taman Seribu Bunga)
Adjacent to the Seri Negeri State government building, this park spans 5.3 hectares with sculpted gardens. The walking track ducks between decorative water features and fragrant gardens in bloom. With free admission, the location is popular with locals, becoming an ad hoc studio for wedding photography. Delicate orchids, hibiscus, herbs and towering banana plants are some of the famous flora and fauna. The location is, on average, quieter than a handful of Malacca’s larger parks and gardens.
