A UNESCO World Heritage City itself, Penang’s George Town has no shortage of energetic and otherworldly traditions. With regular observances throughout the year, Penang marks age-old Malay festivals and events, including spin-offs from other cities. In addition, Penang sees homegrown happenings that celebrate its heritage and multiple ties to UNESCO.
Thaipusam
The three-day celebration, devoted to Lord Murugan, is widely celebrated throughout Malaysia, including custom celebrations in Penang. Several locations on the island are famous for their Thaipusam celebrations, with the first being George Town. In the UNESCO World Heritage city, an early morning procession starts from Sri Mahamariamman Temple—Penang’s oldest. The procession continues, swayed by trance-like song, until the outskirts of the nearby rainforest. Here, devotees climb over-500 stairs to reach the final temple. The event is celebrated over the course of a three-day period, throughout Penang, with colorful performances, food stalls, traditional music and more.
