Penang – Parks & Gardens

Full of misty rainforests and stunning beaches, Penang offers visitors rich pickings for parks and green sanctuaries. Many of the most popular green spaces double as attractions that allow visitors to get up close and personal with nature. Hiking and exploring are popular activities for those seeking to explore the island’s wild side.

Penang Hill

Located 9 kilometers to the west of George Town, the Penang Hill area is part of the Penang Hill Biosphere. This area is officially recognized by UNESCO in the World Network of Biosphere Preserve. The highest hill reaches 833 meters and is the highest point in the Penang state. Visitors can access the hill via the Penang Hill Railway. The location is known for several attractions popular with tourists. Among them are an educational rainforest experience called The Habitat Penang, as well as a promenade and viewing deck offering 360-degree hilltop views.

Penang National Park

Spread across more than 1,200 hectares, the Penang National Park, formerly the Pantai Acheh Forest Reserve, includes more than 400 flora and 140 fauna species. Out of the dense jungle peeks swathes of white beach, popular with hikers for obvious reasons. The park also contains artefacts of geological, historical, cultural and scientific importance. Though known for two major hiking trails, its most famous—the Canopy Walkway—dares explorers to take the jungle from above: a giddy 15-meter drop stretches for 45 meters at points. An experience for the brave hearted!

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

The park offers visitors an exquisite glimpse into the precious life of butterflies. It is an eye-opening experience for all. Indoor and outdoor attractions include live insect exhibits, with butterflies, spiders and more. The garden’s cocoon design means creatures crawl and fly free yet make contact with visitors in their natural habitat. Regular workshops and classes teach attendees about the world of insect dwellers on Penang. An all-round favorite, it is no wonder the park was voted the prized nature park and garden on the entire island.
